Osmium is found in osmium-iridium ores. Osmium-containing solids are roasted in air, and the volatile osmium tetroxide is absorbed by an alkyl base solution. It is used to make alloys with ultra-high hardness. Alloys of osmium with rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, or platinum are commonly used as bearings in record players, fountain pens, clocks, and instruments.
Application:
1. Osmium can be used as catalyst in industry. Using osmium as catalyst for ammonia synthesis or hydrogenation can obtain high conversion rate at low temperature.
2. If the platinum mixed with a little osmium, it can be made into a large hardness and sharp osmium platinum alloy scalpel.
3. Osmium iridium alloy can be made by using osmium and a certain amount of iridium, such as the nib of some advanced gold pens that silver white dot namely osmium iridium alloy, osmium iridium alloy hard wear resistance, can be used as a clock and important instrument bearings, the service life is very long.
