Lutetium is a metal element with the chemical symbol Lu. The element corresponding to lutetium is a silvery white metal.
It is the hardest and densest metal among the rare earth elements; its melting point is 1663℃, boiling point is 3395℃, and density is 9.8404. Lutetium is relatively stable in the air.
Applications:
✔ Rare earth metals and their alloys play a role in deoxidation and desulfurization in steelmaking
✔ Rare earth polishing powder is used for polishing various glass devices
✔ Single high-purity rare earth oxides are used to synthesize various phosphors
✔ Rare earth metals and their alloys are used to make ductile iron, high-strength gray cast iron and vermicular cast iron, which can change the morphology of graphite in cast iron and improve the casting process
✔ Used in petroleum catalytic cracking process
✔ Adding 0.3% rare earth metals to Fe-Cr-Al electric heating alloy can improve the antioxidant capacity

History:
Discovery process: Lutetium was separated from ytterbium by French chemist Urban in 1906. It is also a rare earth element discovered and confirmed in the early 20th century. The Latin name of Lutetium comes from the ancient name of Paris, France, which is Urban's birthplace.
The discovery of lutetium and another rare earth element, europium, completed the discovery of all rare earth elements existing in nature.
Their discovery can be considered to have opened the fourth door to the discovery of rare earth elements and completed the fourth stage of the discovery of rare earth elements.
