History:
In 1878, French spectroscopist and chemist Delafontaine discovered a new element called decipium from the element called didymium discovered by Mosander.
But in 1879, another French chemist Boisbaudranly used spectral analysis to determine that decipium was a mixture of some unknown and known rare earth elements, and separated a new element from it that was unknown at the time and named it samarium, with the element symbol Sm, which is samarium.
