Cobalt oxide reacts easily with silica and silicon dioxide at high temperature. Reaction with aluminium oxide or zinc oxide produces various pigments.

Cobalt oxide is an important transition metal oxide. Usually used as the main raw material for the production of cemented carbide, super heat-resistant alloys, insulating materials and magnetic materials, as well as catalysts and dyes in the chemical industry.
